I was a young intern when I first discovered the devastating nature of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), as well the power of advanced therapy to change lives. IBDs, such as Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic immune disorder that disproportionately affect young people.
I still picture a young woman in her 20s, who had an open connection between her bladder and her bowel. She was septic from the intense urinary tract infection and was fading away. Surgery was not possible, but a new medication had recently become available. We gave her a single dose and within five days she was a new person! That left a huge impression on me, and I wanted to dedicate my medical career to advancing my knowledge and experience in helping people with IBD and other digestive conditions.
Gut conditions and diseases, particularly IBD are often either misdiagnosed or not treated effectively, result in patients needing to undergo life-changing bowel-removal surgery. Yet, the right diagnosis and understanding of the complexity of IBD, and strategic use advanced therapies, new medications, and lifestyle management can make a huge difference to a patient’s health and quality of life.
Friends, relatives, neighbours, Google … there are so many sources of information when it comes to our health, and not all of it is accurate or helpful. Yet, I encourage you to gather as much information as you can, so you can ask me anything and everything about your condition and treatment. I want you to be fully informed when it comes to your treatment. It’s your decision.
